Historic Comstock Unmined 85% - 90% in part due to more than 100 Legal Disputes between owners concerning the domain of a claim as veins led through several claims. Imagine trying to survey hundreds of feet underground in tunnels a few feet wide and not very tall, tunnels that slope, bend, move diagonally and zig-zag three dimensionally, then project all that on a flat 2-D surface map in 1870. There were twice as many lawyers as mining companies as each side of a dispute had a law firm. Lawyer fees subtracted one third of the revenue from the mines. Now 80% - 85% of the Comstock is consolidated under Goldspring Inc. More old patent claims still held in family ownerships are being negotiated for inclusion into the Goldspring Inc. twenty five (25) year comprehensive mining plan. Virginia city is worth a visit just for the history - recommend on a 3-day weekend that could start with an evening in Reno, NV, 30 miles, 1-1/4 hours half on windy mountain roads to the northwest, but you will want to stop for expansive views of the Carson Valley high above at the top of Geiger Grade and then look westward to the huge wall of blue hued Sierra Mountains, the foundation for Lake Tahoe beyond.
